The Best Cold Water Bait? Suspending Jerkbaits Explained Bass Fishing Video

Subscribe on YouTube

Cold water and suspending jerkbaits go together like peanut butter and jelly. When the water temperature drops into the 50s, 40s, and even the 30s, this might be the best bass bait ever created. The ability for a jerkbait to sit motionless, slowly rise, or slowly sink drives cold water bass absolutely crazy.

In this Ike In The Shop, I break down suspending jerkbaits from A to Z — when to throw them, shallow vs deep diving bills, color selection, how to modify your bait to suspend, sink, or rise, and the most important part of all: cadence. The difference between getting a few bites and having an unbelievable day in cold water often comes down to cadence and pause length.

Remember this rule:
Rising water temp = rising bait
Falling water temp = sinking bait
Stable water temp = suspending bait

If you fish anywhere that has cold water in the fall, winter, or early spring, and you don’t have a suspending jerkbait tied on, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

Slow down, lengthen your pauses, and let the fish tell you what they want.

Hope this one helps you catch a few more bass this cold water season.
