Berkley Beast and Tru-Tungsten Weights for Largemouth in Cabbage Patches

Last regular season stop on the bass tour, Lake Oneida. You know Lake Oneida, one of my favorite lakes in the country, going into it really excited. I ended up not having a great tournament there but I did catch fish. I caught enough limits to get me to the post season.

So let's talk about what I did at Oneida. I got to Oneida and it was really a weird deal because there were roaming smallmouths, schooling smallmouths, I never found those. And then there were the largemouth in the weeds and that's really what I concentrated on, kind of the same thing I did at last years event. And my number one pick, just like last year, was a Berkley Beast. This is a bait that I designed with my good friend John McGraw.

We designed it for Berkley to be not only a gliding bait, but a flipping bait and that's how I use it, I flip it. It's pretty awesome, it's got an awesome shape. Ribs that go vertically in the bait and it's got these flappers that go crazy on the fall, and that's really important.

So I use the 5 inch Berkley Beast and a big heavy Tru-Tungsten weight, a three-quarter and a one ounce Tru-Tungsten weight matched up with that and then I use the new Youvella flipping hook in 3/0. 3/0 Youvella hook is perfect for matching the Beast.

My basic technique was to fish this Beast in circle patches. What are circle patches? Well circle patches are round clumps of grass, specifically cabbage grass so you have vast miles and miles of milfoil, and ever once in a while in there you'd have a cabbage patch, a circle patch of cabbage grass. I would take a flipping rod Team Daiwa 8-foot Steez rod 20 pound fluorocarbon and I'd take that Beast and flip it in there. It would fall with heavy weight, it would fall really fast, create a reaction strike and I'd catch those fish. Absolutely, if you want to go flipping and want to catch big fish out of grass, try the Berkley Beast, Tru-Tungsten weights, Youvella Hooks and you'll catch big bass.
