The 20 Minute Spinnerbait Challenge | Going Ike Bass Fishing Video

Folks at home, this one came together FAST.

We had a storm moving in, the schedule was packed, and we only had about 20 minutes to make a Going Ike episode happen. To make things even crazier, we had a big shoot with Vegas coming up later in the garage, so all the camera batteries were on charge and we couldn’t pull them. That meant this entire challenge was filmed on a cell phone.

So we hit Lake X with a simple mission: grab a spinnerbait, grab a phone, and see if we could catch bass before the weather shut us down.

But this episode ended up being about a lot more than just beating the clock.

One of the biggest mistakes I see anglers make with a spinnerbait is throwing it out and reeling it straight back to the boat at one speed. A spinnerbait is at its best when it’s changing. Speeding up, slowing down, stalling, deflecting, and most importantly changing direction around cover.

In this video, I talk about a retrieve adjustment that has helped me catch bass for decades. As your spinnerbait approaches a piece of cover—a dock post, grass edge, laydown, stump, or isolated target—don’t just keep reeling. Give the bait a quick burst, a stall, or a directional change. That sudden change in speed and angle often triggers a reaction bite from fish that were following but hadn’t committed.

A lot of bass don’t eat a spinnerbait because it looks like food. They eat it because it suddenly looks like prey trying to escape.

This was a fun reminder that you don’t need a pile of gear, a fancy camera setup, or a full day on the water to learn something and catch fish. Sometimes all you need is a rod, a bait, and twenty minutes before the sky opens up.

Thanks for watching!
